Is an AI Receptionist Worth It for Contractors?

The honest answer: it depends on how many calls you miss and what a booked job is worth to you. Here's how to work it out with your own numbers instead of industry hype.
The break-even math
Monthly value of recovered calls = weekly calls × % missed × % of missed callers who would have booked × average job value × 52/12.
If that number is comfortably above the monthly plan cost (including overage), it's likely worth testing.
Example (illustrative inputs, not averages)
50 calls/week, 20% missed, 30% would book, $300 average job → 3 lost bookings/week → about $3,900/month. Against a $49-$149/mo plan, recovering even a fraction of that covers the cost. Your numbers may be very different, so use your own.
Questions to ask before buying
- Does it book into the software you use, natively?
- Can it transfer real emergencies to a person?
- What happens in your busiest month on its billing model? (see cost guide)
- Is there a trial so you can test with real calls?

FAQ
Is an AI receptionist worth it for a small contractor?
It's worth it when the revenue from bookings you'd otherwise miss is more than the plan cost. Use the calculator with your own call log numbers, then compare the result to entry prices such as Dialzara $29/mo, Rosie $49/mo or OnCrew $49/mo (verified on vendor pricing pages, 2026-10-13).
When is it probably not worth it?
If you rarely miss calls, have a dedicated office person covering all hours, or most callers need a detailed on-site estimate before anything can be booked, the savings may be small. We don't publish industry-wide missed-call statistics because we haven't found reliable sourced figures.
Can I try before committing?
Several vendors list free trials or tiers: Smith.ai's AI-first plan is free for 25 calls, and OnCrew, Goodcall and XBert AI list 14-day trials, bevado a 7-day trial (per our vendor data).
